Demonstration Pilot

openairboston.net is deploying the first WiFi broadband network demonstration pilot in the City of Boston. openair and its partners, BelAir Networks, MetroNext, Galaxy Internet Services and others, will design, construct and operate this WiFi network covering approximately one square mile of the Roxbury area. Neighborhood Characteristics

The designated partner of the City of Boston for this project, openairboston.net is working closely with many City agencies, such as Public Works, Transportation, Public Schools, Libraries, Housing Authority; and others; private property owners who are stepping up to help with the pilot; and community groups which are so critical to the success of this pilot. Partners include: Timothy Smith Network; Madison Park Development Corporation and Roxbury Multi-Service Center; Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Middle School; Dorchester Bay EDC; and Boston Digital Bridge Foundation.

openairboston.net held community meetings at the Dudley Branch of the Boston Public Library and the Lilla Frederick Pilot School as part of the planning process, and continues to hold regular meetings with its community group partners for this pilot.

openairboston.net expects to make this demonstration project a success by helping accomplish the following major goals of the overall network:

As well, this pilot will allow openairboston to gain insights into a range of technical, political and practical issues prior to the deployment of a city-wide network, from how to work most effectively with the community to the most realistic deployment schedule.
